Mets Defeat Nationals with Pete Alonso’s Home Run
Latest News
WASHINGTON — Pete Alonso hit a 446-foot home run, Harrison Bader added a two-run shot, and the New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals 6-3 on Tuesday.
David Peterson worked seven efficient innings in his second start of the season for the Mets, who have won four of six after losing seven of 19.
Alonso hit a ninth-inning homer off Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan, who entered with Washington down 5-2. In 81 games against the Nationals, Alonso has hit 26 home runs, with 14 of those at Nationals Park — the most by a visiting player in the last five years. Left-hander DJ Herz (0-1) made his Major League debut for Washington, replacing starter Trevor Williams, who is out with an injury. But Herz exited after just over four innings, allowing four runs and seven hits.
Bader put the Mets on the board in the fourth with a 1-2 cutter from Herz that he hit 390 feet for his third homer of the year.
Herz exited after allowing back-to-back homers to Alonso and Brandon Nimmo at the start of the fifth.
For the Mets, Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor went 2-for-5. Dominican Starling Marte went 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Cuban José Iglesias went 1-for-4.
