A Legacy of Freedom and Struggle: Juneteenth Belt 2024
During the pandemic, the boxing world found new ways to communicate and entertain through technology. One initiative emerged from “The Barbershop Conversations,” where it was suggested that the World Boxing Council (WBC) commemorate Juneteenth, a significant day in American history.
Significance of Juneteenth
Juneteenth celebrates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Texas finally learned of their freedom, marking a significant milestone in the abolition of slavery in the United States.
Creation of the Juneteenth Belt
In response to the suggestion, the WBC created the Juneteenth Belt, named “Freedom.” This belt was first presented on June 19, 2021, in Houston, Texas, and was awarded to Jermall Charlo after his victory against Juan Macias Montiel. Coincidentally, that same week, President Joe Biden declared Juneteenth a national holiday.
2024 Edition: A Tribute to Gary Russell Sr.
The 2024 edition of the Juneteenth Belt has been presented to the Russell Dynasty in honor of Gary Russell Sr., who passed away in May 2022. Russell Sr. was a fundamental figure in the boxing world, guiding his sons to success and becoming a pillar of his community.
Recognition of a Legendary Family
Gary Russell Sr.’s love and dedication not only forged champions but also strengthened community bonds and promoted boxing as a tool for social change.
Juneteenth Belt 2024: A Symbol of Pride and Memory
The Juneteenth Belt 2024 is a unique piece of art symbolizing pride and memory. It serves as a reminder of the struggle for freedom and equality and pays tribute to all heroes who have defended human rights and fought against discrimination.
